Snowman Suggestions: Math, Snacks, and Sensory Exploration

I am "snow" in love with this winter-y sensory bin activity from KatherineMaries.com. This must visit link also features some great snowman crafts and activities.

H is for Homeschooling shares some other ideas for a snow themed sensory bin.

Preschool Alphabet has a picture of a healthy snowman snack idea.

The kids at Under the Big Top practiced their names by making snowman with every letter.

Swamp Frog First Grade made a downloadable snowman to practice fact families.

Fabulously First Grade has another version of a snowman themed fact family practice activity.

Tons of Fun used the idea of stacking a snowman to practice number ordering.

Teacher Time 123 suggests building a paper snowman to practice measuring length and diameter.

Somewhat Simple is offering a free printable for one of our favorite dice games, this version is Roll-A-Snowman.

Pitner's Potpourri put together an activity to combine drawing snowmen and practicing multiplication facts.

Snowflake Sculptures, Rhymes, Stamps & Crafts

Welcome 2013! There isn't enough snow yet in our city for winter sports or snowmen, but the kids are ready to play with snowflakes. Here are a few suggestions for some snow-y learning until the real white stuff covers the ground.

Winter White Writing Activities & Crafts

Are you still studying snow or, like me, are you SO over Winter already?!?! Well, these great learning and creating activities might inspire you to give the chill another chance before kicking off all things Spring!

K is for Kindergarten used the fictional book Snowmen at Night to introduce a fun writing project.

A Place Called Kindergarten used the non fiction book The Story of Snow to kick off an informational gathering/research activity and a neat follow up craft.

Ten Kids and a Dog used their handprints and some white paint to make adorable winter scenes.

Off 2 Kindergarten used the ficitional book The Snow Globe Family to inspire creative writing with her students.

Our Crafts~N~Things focused on the natural science part of winter by experiencing animals and their habitats.

While several of these links are from kindergarten teachers I believe the activities can be adapted appropriately for most preschool and elementary age students.

Let's warm things up today with...

...a story about a mitten
Arts and Crofts put together a retelling activity using Jan Brett's The Mitten. Retelling demonstrates reader comprehension which is a necessary piece in becoming a successful reader.
ObSEUSSed put together a matching game using children's mittens to accompany the same story.

Little Won ders' Days put together kittens and mittens to act out the nursery rhyme.

...a cup of homemade cocoa
Here’s a favorite, easy & inexpensive, recipe for hot chocolate from The Frugal Homeschooling Mom.

Ten Kids and a Dog also shared a recipe for "the creamiest" hot chocolate.

Welcome to Our Wonderland also has a special homemade hot cocoa recipe to share.

...a scarf

Make and Takes shares a tutorial for making a fancy fringed fleece scarf.

A List Maker's Life explains a simple version of fleece scarf making that was do-able for her 4 and 6 year olds.

Do you remember Wubbzy?
The cute and quirky bendy-tailed star of the Nick Jr. TV series Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!, is pumped up and ready for the Winter Olympics too. In the newest installment of the DVD series from Anchor Bay Entertainment, starring Michelle Kwan as Michelle Kwanzleberry and Tiki Barber as Touchdown Tiki, Wubbzy is going for the gold!

Snow and Snowmen

This cute snowflake at Live, Learn, Love was made as an ornament but could also be used in conjunction with a snow themed book and hung up and enjoyed all winter long. Depending on what type of buttons you have, you could practice simple patterning skills when laying down the buttons. Kids can count out the buttons as the work and get some extra practice in while having fun crafting.

At Katie's Nesting Spot, a simple self correcting counting activity was recently shared.

You won't believe how much snow themed fun Jo at Somewhat Organized, Somewhat Crafty, Tot Teacher and Mommy recently had. She may call herself "somewhat organized" but we were impressed by how nicely she put each child's activities in their own little container. Head over to see the fun they had with glitter playdoh, snowman soup, making snowflake frames, sorting with snowman beads, and making pom pom snowmen.

Erica has a bunch of great snowman themed printables for you! We like the capital/lowercase Ss sorting pictured above, head over to her post to see the snowman cutting activities, patterning page, color match, snowman letter match, letter s scavenger hunt, snowman size sort, puzzle, and a whole lot more!

Erin at laughpaintcreate had her students create fun collaged snowmen, be sure you head over to see the fun variations the different kids made.

If it's too cold to play in the snow outside, do what Michelle at A Mommy's Adventures did, bring the snow indoors! Besides the real snowman, she and her daughter also had a lot of fun playing with a felt version.

Plus they also did several snowman themed art projects, this one based on popular children's book Snowballs by Lois Ehlert is our favorite. The colorful ice cube painting and salt paint snowmen also looked like a lot of fun and incorporated so many fun textures.

Erin did this Magic Snowflake activity with her students at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.
