Tap Into Your Talents with a Tangled Giveaway

Updated 4/2: Congratulations to Commenter #8, as chosen by Random.org. Jade =) said... "Encouraging kids in their talents means you have to give them some room to figure out what they enjoy and are good at. You have to let the kids figure it out for the most part, that way they'll really be into it. Then help them with it, root for 'em, find ways for them to showcase their skills." March 23, 2011 9:09 PM UPDATED 3/24: The comments being left on this post are so thoughtful and inspiring. We appreciate it! In fact, the movie promoters are so impressed with all of you that they would like to upgrade the prize to a Blu-Ray Combo Pack, instead of just the DVD. In addition, we would love to build a post (or series of posts) around your comments on encouraging talents in young children. It would be fantastic if you would submit pictures of your talented children in action. It would also be awesome if you would send us pictures and/or post to your blog and send us the link of your family discovering their hidden talents with the cooking, crafting, hair styling projects and more found in the Rapunzel widget! Thanks & HAVE FUN!!! As parents, and educators, we often recognize amazing talents in our children that they may not yet be tapping in to. In the newest Disney movie, Tangled, Rapunzel's overprotective mother, Gothel, unfortunately doesn't recognize all that Rapunzel is capable of. Instead she hides her away in a tower where Rapunzel is left to dream of discovering all the possiblity the world holds. It isn't until a silly drifter, Flynn Ryder, stumbles into her life and takes her on an adventure that ultimately leads her to discovering the strength she never knew, that Rapunzel recognized her amazing talents. What can we do to encourage the talents in our kids? How do you help your students realize their potential? Do you have a new found talent? Leave a comment, answering one (or all) of these questions, from now until April 1st for your chance to WIN a Tangled prize package from Disney! Your package will include the Tangled DVD to be released on March 29th and a t-shirt or beanie baby plush of one of the movie characters! While you wait for this fun DVD release and for our winner announcment, enjoy the many features found in the promotional widget below. Your children will love following along as Rapunzel helps them discover their own hidden talents. Personally, I enjoyed the tips from Claire and Glen Keane on decorating a magical room much like Rapunzel's.

  1. I think the best way to encourage kids to reach their full potential is to expose them to a lot of different things so they can figure out what interests them - and then encourage them to set goals and meet them!

We haven't seen Tangled, and I know my 5yo especially would be thrilled to win this DVD!

  2. When we notice something they're good at, we tell them! We get excited, we encourage them, we help them to grow & develop in that area.

  3. I think that by just telling your kids that they can do anything (especially when they say they can't) will help boost their confidence and allow them to shine in what they do!

  4. NEVER say that your child CAN'T do something, and never let them tell you that they CAN'T do something. They are capable of great things. The may not be able to do something yet, they might need practice or teaching or help, or to overcome some other obstacle. I strive to empower my children to do all the things that they are aspiring to. They need lots of help, but I don't let them give up, and I never let them tell me that they can't do something.

  5. When I child shows and interest in something, I try to build on that...at times even pushing them a bit to get them through some of the practice it takes to get really good at something...when it becomes more fun.

  6. my oldest loves to do new things but gets frustrated easily. This week she is learning how to knit! She is doing so well but she can be hard on herself. I had her walk away from it and then try again this afternoon. That little break did the trick! She worked hard and showed perseverance today! :) love those moments!

  7. My son loves to dance (and sing), and even though lots of parents would never allow their son to take dance, I gladly take him and he loves it. I want him to know that he can be whoever he wants. There is no mold for boys and mold for girls!

  9. Definitely by encouraging their talent, so that it will grow as much as possible or enrolling them in a program specifically designed for that talent.

  10. I think giving them time to work on "talents" , guidance as needed, and encouragement are the building blocks for growing talents.

  12. I try to just let them do what they're interested in. And I try to support that--for example, I'll pick up a book at the library that goes along with their interests.

  13. I beleive that children have to have many life experiences to truely find their passion. Then it is up to us as parents to do all we can to support them as they learn and become successful.

  14. I feel that in order to encourage a child in their talent(s) --see what they enjoy and what they excel at and use it in everyday interaction and activities.

My 6 yr old LOVES to draw. If you give her a coloring book, you won't really see much "coloring" in it; you will, however, see plenty of additions to each coloring picture. We noticed her talent (well, I guess we definitely see it as a talent) when she was about 2 years old. We were always so impressed with her creativity on paper (with shapes, colors, and patterns).

so, I just recently started homeschooling and I try to incorporate drawing in as much of our curriculum as possible. :)

  15. I think to encourage kids to developed talents, it's important to be open minded and not try to impose our ideas of what talents they should be developing. Let them explore things that interest them--often those are also the things they are good at!

  16. One of the best ways we can encourage the talents/interests in our own kids is to be excited and engaged right alongside them. If they are interested in airplanes (for instance), take them to the library and check out every book on planes, make model planes with them, and take them to plane museums. If you are as excited as they are, they will be so much more encouraged and engaged. My parents did this with me no matter what I was interested in - sewing, basketball, etc. It was a blessing in my life and I now do it with my children!

  17. I'm a huge supporter of positive reinforcement for kids! If we slow down in our own lives and take the time to listen and spend with our kids we will recognize their talents and things they get excited about and will be able to help them foster a healthy dream to realize those talents!

  18. Encourage our kids to practice something they are good at and offer them lots of opportunities to practice..

  19. I think trying to expose children to as many life experiences as we can helps develop interests and talents. When an interest or talent in an area occurs, I think it is important to be just as excited as our children. We should give as much support and motivation as possible. If our children fail at something at first, we should teach that from failure we learn.

Thanks we haven't seen this movie and our excited about this give away!

  20. I absolutely love this movie!=) I think we can encourage the talents of our children by exposing them to situations where they need to use those talents. I think it's a huge encouragement to them when they see what they are able to do.

  21. It's important to expose our children to a variety of activities and learning opportunities. I think it is equally important to encourage them to practice and keep trying, especially when attempting something new. Very few of us could just sit down and play a sonata on the piano. Most people have to work to become good at what they enjoy. This is a valuable skill we can teach our children.

  22. In my opinion, unstructured play without constraints is one of the most crucial parts to helping young children develop talents. This gives them a creative foundation on which to build and fine tune their talents. They also learn to think for themselves and solve problems, skills necessary for success in all areas, including the arts, sports and academics.

  23. Good question. I think first off you need to make sure you are spending lots of time getting to know just what that talent may be. Then help them to continue to work at that talent by encouraging them!
    thanks

  25. I pay attention to what my kids show an interest in and then encourage them to pursue it.

Having pre-conceived ideas of what our kids will become or do sets everyone up for disappointment. Letting our kids figure out what they like is best!

I have no new found talents, but I keep trying to find time to nurture old ones...

  26. I always try to encourage my kids to explore different things. When they show an interest in something we try to give them an opportunity to try it out and explore it more. We also tell them we just want them to do their best, we don't hold them to any standards other than that.

I try and encourage my daughter to do anything she enjoys...hopefully she will find her talent.

  29. One of our OpenCourt unit themes is STICK TO IT. I love this unit and really can bring out sooo many different examples--from tying shoes, to learning to read, to even branching out to include spiders trying to spin a web!!!

Also, one of my teaching mottos is: NEVER EVER do for a child what he can do for himself. My kids know I won't do it for them--ever--if they haven't tried. They also know that if they can't do something, they need to figure out a way to help them solve that problem. They really do come up with ways to help themselves!!!

  30. How do you help your students realize their potential?

I help my students to realize their potential by never giving up on them. Encouraging them that they are special and can do anything they put their hearts and minds too. Only they can limit what they can do. I encourage them to push through their trials. Perseverance is key!

  31. I think giving alot of positive reinforcement helps children realize their potential. Also by exposing kids to many different activites will help guide them to find what they are talented in.

  37. I agree with many others who have commented along the lines of exposing your children to many possible interests, and cultivating and encouraging the ones in which they take on a personal fascination. It is so important to not FORCE a child to follow the path of our own dream for them, but to pay attention to the things that capture their attention and provide outlets for creativity in those areas.
