Bilingual Wednesdays- Día de la tierra

Word recognition is an early skill that helps your children identify new words, associate words and pictures and consolidate word structure either in English or Spanish. I made this set of letter tiles to practice word recognition with one of my bilingual groups.



In this case you will find some cards and letter tiles to "write" words such as
Earth / Tierra
Tree / árbol
Sun / sol
Water/ agua
Leaf /hoja 
Branch/ rama
Flower /flor
Bee / abeja
Soil /suelo
Snail / caracol


Print, cut and laminate for durability. Let children form the words using the tiles.

Celebrating Arbor Day

Here in the United States we are observing Arbor Day today. Arbor Day was established to encourage tree planting and care. Founded by J. Sterling Morton in 1872, it's celebrated on the last Friday in April.

In celebration of all things trees, and the impact they have on our Earth, it is also a good day to try some of those Earth Day activities that you didn't have time for on the 22nd!

Teaching Tiny Tots has submitted a great post about creating a soda bottle terrarium with your tots.

As part of the Sunflower Club activities at NurtureStore they've conducted an experiment to see what seeds need to grow. An appropriate extension activity for Arbor Day.

Play Activities put together a family activity for celebrating the Earth. They made plantable seeded paper and have shared the step by step instructions with all of us!

Letters, Numbers, and Books Oh My has put together a collection of posts in a feature they call Countdown to Earth Day. You will want to check out the recipes, book reviews, activities, and more!

Polwig.com put together some fun jewelry projects using recycled soda cans. What a unique want to reuse and upcycle! This activity is best suited to older children or children under close adult supervision.

Adventures of Bear used the book Seeds, Seeds, Seeds to kick off a series of activities about seeds and planting. Planting something of your own is a great way to celebrate Earth today.

Under the Table and Dreaming put together some amazing Earth Day snacks. I love the Rice Krispie treat earth pops.

Sewing and Crafting with Sarah has posted two craft projects using recycled materials. The picture here shows a desk organizer.

24/7 Moms has a fun post with 14 Earth Day projects. We especially like these recycled paper weave baskets.

Toddler Learning Activities has put together a list of Earth Day activities for tots and older kids.

Kid's Green Crafting & Activities

Because Earth Day and being green should be a change for a lifetime, for today's Fun Friday post we'd like to share some activities that incorporate items that might otherwise end up in the trash. This was a lot of fun putting together, if you've done a green craft be sure to leave us a link in the comments so we can check them out!


Many Little Blessings has a great idea for turning a shipping box their family got from Amazon into a box house. Teach Mama has another great use, turn it into a sensory box.


Thrifty Craft Mama posted about making doll houses for peg dolls out of recycled items.


k e household used their old milk jug to make a bird feeder.


Got ribbon? Got lots of empty ribbon spools around? Turn them into these bright and colorful spring flowers, as seen on Four Crazy Kings.


Mama King has also turned empty strawberry containers into a treasure box.

Two Little Monkeys has a post devoted to crafts inspired by recycled materials, some for children and some for adults!


Homeschool Creations gives instructions for making a Toilet Paper Tube Train.


Valerie at Frugal Family Fun put all her links to projects that use recyclables all in one handy post. She's got several great ideas so check them out!


Valerie also recently shared a great tutorial on how to turn old magazines into beads, what a great way to reuse them!


Sandy at Just for Fun shared two cute ideas for crafting with old egg cartons. Turn them into caterpillars and flowers. It would be fun to make the caterpillars when doing a Hungry Caterpillar theme.

Noelle at Lil' Bits and Pieces of Me shared an activity using old milk cartons to make blocks. You could decorate the sides with old greeting cards your children have received and incorporate even more recyclables. Another idea is to use this craft to make ABC blocks, you could cut pictures for each letter out of old magazines and paste onto the sides along with the letter.

Learning Activities Using Recycled Materials

Teach Mama uses children's yogurt containers for many uses, including this number activity that kept her kids occupied while she made dinner.
