What in the world is the Summer Vacation Slide?

The summer vacation slide, termed by teachers & educational researchers, refers to the great amount of factual & procedural knowledge that students lose over their summer vacation. Sad, but true, it is proven that in the summer months children lose some of the information gained during the school year. Interestingly, the loss is most pronounced in knowledge based on facts and procedures (ie: spelling & math) than it is in conceptual based skills (life skills, reading, comprehension & problem solving).
