Super Holiday Reading Ideas from the Super WHY Friends

Welcome! New to ABC and 123? Please check out our FAQ in the sidebar.

It's a typical Saturday morning at our house and the kids are looking forward to watching this week's episode of Super WHY - The Gingerbread Boy! Super WHY has become a favorite cartoon my 6, 4, and 2 year olds, but we don't have a chance to see it during the week because of our school routines. Super WHY, Alpha Pig, Princess Preseto, and Wonder Red teach higer order and abstract reading skills, such as inferencing and theme comprehension, throughout their interactive and clever fairytale episodes.

The Super WHY friends offer simple suggestions for integrating reading into eveyrday experiences. They recognize that, like all seasons, the holidays provide super opportunities to keep preschoolers on track toward becoming “super readers.” These simple tips below for making the most of the Christms season have been shared by the experts behind Super WHY.

~Have your child decipher the special message inside your Christmas cards and read the names of family and friends out loud to you as you address the envelopes. Your “super readers” will enjoy reading the notes inside the holiday greetings that arrive in your own mailbox too

~Bring your kids along for some Christmas shopping and let them sound out the signs in the store (i.e. “toys,” “home & garden,” “bedding,” etc.).

~Help your children compose their “wish list” for Santa – and work together to write one for yourself, too!

~ Get a cozy fire going or make some hot cocoa and warm up with your child while reading a Christmas classic storybook.

Just in time for the holidays Super Why and flown into a brand new Christmas DVD, "Twas the Night Before Christmas and Other Fairytale Advenures." The engaging DVD offers even more literacy-focused fun with special features, including interactive games, music videos, printable activities, coloring pages and resources for parents! Sounds like a perfect stocking stuffer for the little learners in your home!
