Sight Word Pancakes

When I think back on my favorite childhood breakfasts, they always seemed to include a short stack of pancakes. Just thinking about them now puts a smile on my face.

This simple game uses this classic breakfast food to help your child playfully learn sight words. To prep, you'll need to gather a few supplies:

• Brown construction paper.
• Scissors.
• A black marker.
• A circular stencil. (I used the rim of my youngest son's sippy cup.)
• A spatula.

Lay the brown paper on a flat surface and use your marker and stencil to trace circles.  If your child is just beginning to learn sight words, you will need 5-6 circles. If your child already knows a big group of sight words, trace about 20 circles.

Now, write one sight word in the middle of each circle.  When choosing the sight words to work on first, many teachers use the most common English words in print. The first 20 words on that list are: {a, I, it, the, and, in, of, to, he, is, that, was, look, you, said, for, up, go, we, play}.  

Again, if your child is new to memorizing sight words, you'll want to pick 5-6 to work on so that she doesn't feel overwhelmed. If your child already knows many sight words, choose the entire list of 20 words.

Cut out the pancake circles and spread them out on a flat surface, face up.  

Now comes the fun, hand your child a spatula and call out a sight word.  Ask her to flip over the pancake that shows the word you selected.

Play continues until all sight words have been flipped. Enjoy!
