There are so many fun ideas to do with eggs.  For today, I'm just going to focus on one of those ideas:

How to best protect an egg.


The main purpose of a nest is to protect and keep eggs safe.  Most birds do not actually live in their nests (I just learned this from our science textbook).  Birds build their nests out of all sorts of materials.  I plan to have my kids make a nest, but this project really was what they wanted to try.

Supplies: fabric, towels, tissue paper, yarn, okay really whatever you want to let them try this with.

Procedure: Let your kids have a set amount of time.  If your kids are anything like mine you need to set a time limit otherwise they will mess around forever!  Then let them have at the tape and whatever else you've put out to put together an egg carrier.  Give advice if asked, but otherwise just let them be.

Once they've designed their perfect egg carrier decide the height they'll drop it from.  This is how you can add difficulty.  For my kids they were just dropping it while standing on a kitchen chair.  But, you could obviously do it from greater heights.

SIDE NOTE: I blew the contents of the eggs out to make it less messy if they did crack, I suspect this changed the results.


Results: We had two successes and one failure.  Our theory on the failure, not enough padding.  Superman designed a long flat one, whereas Princess and Batman designed ones that were more blobs wrapped around

As you can see the kids thought this was quite cool, and very much enjoyed the whole process.

1.  Effects of different liquids on eggs (bleach, vinegar, coke, etc.....)
2.  We also designed a car for the eggs, similar type of experiment, but different design requirements.
3.  The always popular how much salt water does it take to float an egg
4.  Spinning a raw egg vs. a hard-boiled one.
