Spilling The Beans

Playing with Stones

Teaching Young Children submitted her post on teaching the sense of touch through a Mystery
Bag activity.

Annette at The Whipples submitted a fun idea for smell & sound containers. The idea is not on her blog, but is explained here. These are great fun for older children, even middle school age.

Objective: Children will guess what sound or smell is hiding in the canister.

Materials:
~Film canisters (go to a photo developing place like a drugstore or WalMart and just ask for them! I have never been turned down).
Smell ideas: Play-doh, Vicks Vapor Rub,*Vanilla extract,*Root beer extract,*Lemon extract, *Cinnamon,Orange peel M&M’s

Place items in film canister. Use cotton balls on * items.

Sound ideas:Coins,Toothpicks, Rocks, Salt, Flour, Cotton Balls, Candy, Wooden Matchsticks

Instructions:Place items directly in film canisters. Test each item to make certain they are not overfilled. In a classroom setting you could have these in two separate boxes as part of your unit. In a small, personal setting you could even take children (and adults) outside at night to experience these. I would suggest numbering the lids and providing an answer key.

Looking ahead...
Picnic Table Talk this week will be VACATIONS!

  1. Great ideas! My girls love their sand & water table so I could definitely use that for a "sense" idea!
